Our largest contribution to this continues to be our 100% commitment to building only renewable energy generation. With this commitment we play our part to reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of New Zealand’s grid electricity.
But it’s important to us, and to many of our customers, that we contribute in other verifiable ways, like focusing on how Meridian can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions intensity as a company. We’ve chosen, going forward, to use CEMARS certification to provide that verification.
What is CEMARS?
CEMARS is a certification programme run by an independent third-party that tracks our efforts to measure, manage and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions intensity. Our certification covers our parent company (Meridian Energy Ltd). Our subsidiary companies will continue to make their own decisions about certification - Energy for Industry, for example, has been CEMARS certified since 2007.
Both CEMARS and carboNZeroCertTM certification are run by Landcare Research. So why have we changed our certification? Many of our customers have told us that offsetting our unavoidable emissions (which is part of our carboNZero certification) is less important to them than running a sustainable business, focusing on emissions reductions and providing energy solutions. We’ve listened to our customers - we want to focus more of our energy on reducing our carbon footprint rather than offsetting our unavoidable emissions, and we want to invite our customers to come on this journey with us.
So what does this mean for our customers?
We’ll keep using our experience to help our customers manage their own carbon footprints, with handy hints to save power and money, and offering smart solutions to ensure homes are warm and healthy through our other businesses like Right House.
Our largest contribution to sustainability, and what makes us most proud, is our continued commitment to building only renewable generation.
