We are committed to producing electricity from renewable wind and hydro resources. We believe that renewable generation is the sustainable answer for New Zealand's current and future electricity needs. Download our developing renewable energy generation factsheet (125KB pdf) to get an overview of what we do.
Meridian Energy's Te Apiti wind farm was one of the first projects to be allocated Kyoto credits by the New Zealand Government. Through an agreement between Meridian Energy and the Dutch Government's Emission Reduction Procurement Tender (ERUPT), the Te Apiti wind farm also became the first Joint Implementation project outside of Europe.
Meridian Energy has also completed a number of successful VER (Verified Emission Reductions) sales to international companies such as HSBC that seek to offset corporate carbon emissions.
Meridian Energy sells high quality emission reductions. Two of its wind farm projects (Te Apiti and White Hill) have been accepted for registration by the Gold Standard Foundation.
What we have to offer?
We will sell Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) from the Te Apiti and White Hill wind farms and VERs and Kyoto credits (emission reduction units or greened assigned amount units) from the Nelson Landfill gas project.

Meridian Energy's Te Apiti Wind Farm is located in the lower North Island of New Zealand. It is a 90MW wind farm made up of 55 Vestas 1.65MW wind turbines. The wind speeds at the site are on average 9.3 m/s giving an annual output of over 325 GWh. The wind farm reduces GHG emissions by approximately 203,125 tCO2e/year.

Project White Hill is a 58MW wind farm on a world class site in the South Island of New Zealand with an average wind speed of 9.25m/s at hub height. 29 2MW Vestas turbines will generate at least 208.8GWh per year and offset 144,375 tonnes CO2e of emissions per annum, totalling 721,875 tCO2e during 2008-2012.
Electricity is fed into the local grid and then into the national grid thereby displacing thermal generation. Revenue will be derived from the sale of electricity into the national wholesale electricity market and the sale of emission reduction benefits including Emission Reduction Units awarded by the New Zealand Government in recognition of the project's additional nature.

The Nelson Landfill Gas Project involved the collection and treatment of landfill gas at the York Valley landfill, and its transport via pipeline to Nelson Hospital where it is used instead of coal to fuel a boiler system for generating heat. The project is forecast to offset the emission of around 28,477 tonnes of carbon dioxide between 2008 and 2012. The project was developed and funded by Energy for Industry, a business unit of Meridian Energy, in cooperation with Nelson City Council and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. Energy for Industry is also the operator.
Emission reductions by the project have been verified by GHD on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
