Elvers - young native eels - have always inhabited the waters of the Waitaki Valley, Manapouri and Te Anau.
The construction of dam structures provides an obstacle when swimming upstream as part of their natural life cycles. As our ability to modify the environment increases we must accept responsibility for the impact of our activities on the natural world.
The elver trap and transfer programme is a mitigation project undertaken with Ngai Tahu to maintain the life cycle of these native freshwater fish. By assisting the elver over the structures and up the Waitaki catchment, and to lakes Manapouri and Te Anau, the native eel life cycle is assisted.
