Earth Hour goes global

20 March 2008

On Saturday 29 March people all over the world will be taking part in Earth Hour both at home and at work.  Meridian is a proud sponsor of the event in Christchurch and to show our support we are encouraging everyone to switch off lights and any unnecessary appliances - at your home, business or farm.

This is the very first global Earth Hour which was first launched only a year ago in Sydney and resulted in a 10% drop in energy consumption in energy for that hour.

Meridian customers on the Orion network have been informed about Earth Hour and we hope  our customers will show their support.  You can help by telling friends, family and colleagues to switch off between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday.

Earth Hour in Christchurch is a joint initiative from The Press and World Wildlife Fund (NZ) and is also supported by ECan, Christchurch City Council, Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, Christchurch Cathedral and Orion. Orion will be recording the decrease in energy consumption during Earth Hour.
