Local junior stars to rub shoulders with rugby legend

31 August 2009

On Tuesday 1 September ten lucky kids aged between six and eleven will have the privilege of dining with All Black captain Richie McCaw.

The future stars, from eight different clubs around Canterbury, won a competition run by Canterbury Rugby supporter and sponsor Meridian.

The event will be held at AMI Stadium on Tuesday 1 September from 6pm. It will involve a question and answer session with Richie, followed by a tour and group dinner.  Richie will also sign an item – such as a rugby ball or shirt – provided by each young rugby player.

Meridian has been a sponsor of Canterbury Rugby since 2000. Currently its focus is on developmental rugby, as the major sponsor of junior grade rugby, right through to the Meridian Energy Canterbury Rugby Academy.

The Academy offers academic scholarships and elite training and coaching to the rising stars of Canterbury rugby.

Mel Seyfort, Meridian’s Sponsorship Manager, says Meridian’s staff are passionate supporters of grass-roots rugby.

“Our team is right into their rugby and many of them have children who play,” she says. “It is a great thrill to be able to get around the grounds and see our future stars giving it their all.

“Giving ten kids the chance to have dinner with one of their heroes is a great way to end what has been another fantastic season for junior rugby,” she added.

Throughout the season many Meridian staff were on the side-lines of Hagley Park on Saturday mornings ready to comfort shivering supporters with a complimentary tea or coffee and a sausage sizzle.

High-resolution images will be available following the event.
