This year will be the 20th Anniversary of the Meridian Aviemore Classic and the event is expected to be as popular as ever. Around 90 boats will take part in the two days of racing in what has become New Zealand’s largest freshwater regatta.
Race Organiser Ivan Stevenson from the Timaru Yacht and Power Boating club says the Aviemore Classic is an event enjoyed as much by the spectators as the yachtsmen.
“The competition is always tough on the water but the Classic is a great opportunity for locals and yachtsmen from around the South Island to enjoy a great weekend of fun and racing,” he says.
The two-days of trailer-sailing racing caters for a wide range of yachting ability. Ivan Stevenson says this is what makes it such a popular event and one which really unites the whole community.
“It really does have something for everyone. Every year the whole community comes out in force to support the country’s biggest and best freshwater sailing regatta. We are truly grateful for the months of planning from the community and financial support of our sponsors.”
