Meridian gains consent for Manapouri Tailrace Amended Discharge project

14 July 2010

Meridian has welcomed the decision by Environment Southland to grant consent for its Manapouri Tailrace Amended Discharge (MTAD) project.

The MTAD project will increase the maximum allowable water discharge through the Manapouri Power Station to Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound to provide an average additional 89GWH of electricity a year, which is enough power to provide energy to around 11,000 average households.

Spokeswoman Claire Shaw said Meridian was pleased with the positive decision.

“Much research and investigation went into the application to ensure the project addressed all issues and impacts while allowing us to gain maximum benefit from this important asset.

“In the coming weeks we’ll be taking the time to study the detail of this comprehensive decision,” said Ms Shaw.

Overall Manapouri power station would discharge an additional 2.6% when natural conditions, such as rainfall, allow it.
