Project Crimson plants 200 Southern Rata trees in mid -Canterbury

11 September 2008

Meridian staff and representatives from the Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) donned their best gumboots recently to help get New Zealand’s stunning crimson-flowering natives thriving at a location near Hororara and Glentunnel in mid-Canterbury.

Twelve staff from Meridian and seven representatives from the CRFU joined Project Crimson staff to plant around 200 southern rata trees near Washpen Falls, a popular outdoor recreational area with high ecological value.

“It was a very enjoyable and productive day, and it was great to see 200 southern rata planted in an area where they will thrive in amongst a large existing stand of these iconic native trees,” says Meridian’s Mel Seyfort.

Project Crimson is a national conservation trust that was established in 1990 to protect pohutukawa and rata trees around New Zealand by raising awareness of tree protection and supporting restoration programmes.

Mel Seyfort says sponsoring Project Crimson is a natural fit for Meridian.
“Meridian is a 100 per cent New Zealand owned company with a commitment to
renewable energy and environmental sustainability so it is appropriate for us to help out and get our hands dirty to ensure these iconic native trees flourish,’ she says.

Meridian is the major sponsor of Project Crimson Trust.

Crimson Trails have been established in Auckland, Rotorua, Mt Maunganui, Coromandel, Wellington, Golden Bay, Otago/Southland, the West Coast and in Canterbury.
