Landowners choose Meridian for wind farm development

30 January 2008

Meridian confirms that it has been selected by a group of Ohariu Valley landowners to develop a 31-turbine wind farm on their properties.

Together with the landowners Meridian will be discussing the proposal with residents of the Ohariu Valley, north-west of Wellington city, and other interested parties over the next few weeks.

The concept for a wind farm to maintain the viability of the Ohariu Valley farms was first identified by landowners several years ago. Wind farming has been chosen by landowners over other options such as major housing subdivision and forestry, because it is compatible with farming and would allow the lifestyle and rural character of the area to be maintained.

The proposal is called Project Mill Creek, after the creek that flows through the properties.  The area shares the same wind resource as Project West Wind which Meridian is developing in Makara, to the south of Ohariu Valley.

Meridian will be working with the landowners to provide the community with information and gather feedback on the project. This feedback will be considered in shaping the proposal before an application is made for resource consents.

An Open Day will be held on February 12 and 16, details will be advised.  Further information is available here or by phoning 0800 946 463.
