Renewable generation

In the 2007/08 year, Meridian generated almost 12,000 GWh of electricity at our renewable wind and hydro facilities.

Meridian operates eight hydro stations in the South Island’s Waitaki basin, and the country’s largest hydro station at Manapouri in Fiordland.

Operational wind farms are the Te Apiti wind farm in the North Island’s Manawatu, and White Hill in Southland. Construction has begun on Project West Wind, near Wellington, due for completion in 2009.

To meet New Zealand’s growing energy needs, Meridian is committed to building more renewable generation. As well as wind and hydro, we are investigating new technologies that harness other renewable resources, such as solar generation of electricity.
