Technology to help reduce
Driven by the challenging energy use targets set for the new Wellington building at Queen’s Wharf, a project to upgrade office and communications technology was implemented during the 2007/08 year.

The project was rolled out in Wellington in October 2007 and in the South Island offices in May-August 2008. It has made a large contribution to reduction of our annual resource consumption figures.
The technology project:
- replaced all PCs with more energy efficient laptops. Docking stations are now at each desk with a LCD monitor;
- established a wireless network enabling laptops to be taken into meeting rooms to allow for easy collaboration and avoiding unnecessary printing;
- enabled telephone calls to be received electronically via ‘soft phones’, significantly reducing the number of IP phones consuming electricity, and enabled faxes to be distributed electronically to reduce paper use;
- created more video conferencing facilitates in the Queen’s wharf office, and added additional units at the Twizel office and both Christchurch locations; and
- introduced the new ‘follow me’ print system on low power print/copy/scan devices.
