Overview
The proposal plans for the construction of a hydro dam and power station 3 km upstream of the township of Seddonville, 40 km north of Westport in the Buller district. The dam would create a 14 km long and narrow lake reaching back 500m eastwards of Specimen Creek in the Mokihinui Gorge.
The transmission line would traverse 29 km southwards across the Stockton Plateau to a new substation to be located at Cedar Creek in the upper Waimangaroa valley. Meridian and Buller Electricity are working together to investigate local supply options.
The Mokihinui Hydro Proposal would:
- produce between 310 and 360 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year of renewable electricity generation.
- meet the current and immediate future electricity needs of the South Island’s West Coast
- provide security of supply to the West Coast region
- on average – reduce the nodal price on the West Coast in the setting of wholesale electricity prices
- significantly reduce transmission losses currently experienced which can be as much as 50% at peak demand times
- provide an upgrade of and new sections of the 16km degraded walking track from near the entrance of the Mokihinui Gorge to the Mokihinui Forks area.
- Include the formation of a Trust with other individuals and interested parties to investigate the potential to provide a further walking track that would link the Mokihinui Forks to the Lyell.
