Does the freshwater discharge affect the low salinity layer in Doubtful Sound?
The freshwater discharge amplifies the low salinity layer in Deep Cove where the tailrace enters the sound. However, monitoring to date indicates that natural physical factors can have a greater effect on amplifying the low salinity layer, in particular during major north west storm events. Under these circumstances there are typically strong winds blowing up the sound associated with intense rainfall which runs off into the sound. This natural combination of factors can amplify the low salinity layer towards Deep Cove.
