How does it work?
The Mahana Blue Water Heating Unit, launched by Danfoss NZ Ltd, is installed next to the refrigeration unit. It collects waste heat from the fridge unit and uses it to convert cold water into hot water (85 degrees C), heating water when it's needed and reducing the load on the refrigeration plant.
Normally, a hot water cylinder can take around six hours to heat its full load of cold water. Mahana Blue can heat the water closer to the time it's required - saving time, electricity and money.
How much will it save?
In tests on one of Meridian Energy's dairy farms in North Otago, Mahana Blue has saved Meridian over 60% of the energy used to heat water (approximately 28% of a typical dairy shed's energy consumption).
It should be noted that at this stage results are indicative only, and Meridian Energy is not in a position to give a specific representation or warranty on the perfomanace of Mahana Blue.
What equipment do I need?
Mahana Blue is simple to install and use with existing refrigeration plant. All that is needed is three-phase power, a moderate water flow and a low-pressure hot water system, including a cylinder.
