New Zealand's electricity industry

Nearly 2 million New Zealand households and businesses purchase more than $6 billion of electricity annually.

There are four groups involved in generating and supplying this electricity to consumers: generators, Transpower, network companies and electricity retailers.

Generators produce electricity which is then sold into the wholesale electricity market for supply to electricity retailers. Meridian Energy is New Zealand's largest electricity generator and, like most other generators, we’re also an electricity retailer.
