Summer 2011

Approximately 85,000 native trees and shrubs are taking root across New Zealand thanks to the Living Legends planting programme that took place during the Rugby World Cup 2011.

More than 5000 volunteers registered to join one of the 17 nationwide planting projects, each one dedicated to a local rugby legend. Between 100 and 400 volunteers mucked in in wind, rain and sun… or snow in the case of Dunedin.

Kaumatua and local dignitaries joined community volunteers and rugby legends such as Sir Brian Lochore and Sir Colin Meads, called ‘inspirational, hard-working kiwi heroes’ by Guy Waipara, Meridian’s External Relations General Manager. A huge thank you to all of you.

“Being part of the Living Legends planting days has been an amazing opportunity to support people and communities who share our passion for New Zealand. A big thank you to all those who volunteered to help plant in some of our most special places across Aoteoroa. You’ve created a legacy for future generations,” says Guy.

Meridian and the Department of Conservation are major sponsors of the Living Legends programme, a partnership of Project Crimson and the Tindall Foundation.

More plantings are planned at the sites for 2012. For updates and to check out the programme, visit the Living Legends website.
