As New Zealand's largest electricity generator, we're a key player in the industry – so we're able to offer our customers competitive pricing over the long term.
Because we're confident of the value we deliver, our pricing is completely transparent. We welcome the opportunity for customers to compare our pricing, and our services, through competitive tendering.
It's important to understand what makes up the total price you pay for your electricity and the way prices are quoted, so you can make meaningful comparisons. It's also important to consider which is the best pricing option for you.
Like most retailers, Meridian Energy quotes prices at GXP – or Grid Exit Point. This enables you to compare pricing from different retailers in a meaningful way, without having to factor in local losses.
Here's why.
The GXP is where the electricity leaves the national grid and enters the local network company's lines (or directly to the customer in the case of some very large electricity users).
The GXP price takes no account of local losses. Local losses refer to the electricity lost during local distribution due to factors such as resistance, heat and the size of the cable. These losses are an inevitable part of electricity distribution, and every network company applies a "loss factor" to their network charges to account for them. The same loss factor is applied to every electricity retailer.

Corporate customers can choose from two different pricing options, depending on the way they use electricity. Pricing for each option is driven by supply and demand factors. The right approach for each customer depends on their unique requirements – how much electricity they use, when they use it, and what they use it for. There's also a trade-off between simplicity and complexity – for example, most customers have straightforward pricing based on Business Day or Non-Business Day consumption.
