The Pukaki hydro project is a proposed 35 megawatt hydro station on the Waitaki hydro scheme in Canterbury.
The hydro station would produce enough electricity each year for about 10,000 average New Zealand homes.
Meridian applied for resource consents in 2010 to build a hydro station between Lake Pukaki and the Pukaki-Ohau canal. This project is known as Pukaki hydro.
Meridian has been granted resource consents for the Pukaki hydro project by Environment Canterbury and the Mackenzie District Council.
The project is now in pre-construction design.
Why build a hydropower station here?
We’ve long identified the head across the canal intake structure at Lake Pukaki as having the potential to increase the generation capacity of the Waitaki scheme. It would use the existing flow into the canal.
The new small power house will be located close to an existing canal inlet structure. Construction will take place around the gate and canal, on land already owned by Meridian.
The New Zealand Government’s aspiration is for 90 percent of electricity generation to be from renewable sources by 2025.
Where possible, we plan to use local suppliers to help develop the power station and run it once it’s operational.
