Mark Binns

Chief Executive, LLB

Mark Binns joined Meridian as Chief Executive in January 2012. Prior to this appointment Mark was Chief Executive of the Infrastructure Division of Fletcher Building Limited, the company’s largest division. Mark worked at Fletcher Building and its predecessor, Fletcher Challenge Limited, for 22 years. During that period he was responsible for operations in Australia, South East Asia, India, South America, the United States and the South Pacific, as well as in New Zealand. Mark also held director roles in numerous subsidiary companies of the Fletcher Building group.

His career has seen him closely involved in some of New Zealand’s largest infrastructure projects, including the Wiri Prison public-private partnership, Waterview Connection, Eden Park, SKYCITY, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and the Manapōuri tunnel. By training, Mark is a qualified lawyer and, prior to joining Fletcher Challenge, was a partner at Simpson Grierson in Auckland.

Neal Barclay

Neal Barclay was appointed to General Manager, Retail, in April 2016. Prior to this he was General Manager of Markets and Production from October 2009, having joined Meridian in July 2008 as Chief Financial Officer. Before joining Meridian, Neal, a Chartered Accountant, held a number of general manager roles in a 13 year career with Telecom New Zealand Limited.

Neal is responsible for retail operations and continuing to drive customer focus, leveraging Meridian’s position as one of New Zealand’s most sustainable brands.

Paul Chambers

Before taking up his role at Meridian in 2009, Paul was Chief Financial Officer of Transfield Services New Zealand. Paul has extensive senior finance experience in a variety of industries, including ports, manufacturing and retail, both in the UK and France. Paul is a chartered accountant (NZICA and ICAEW). 

Paul’s team has responsibility for strategy coordination, performance measurement, external reporting, funding, risk management coordination, procurement and financial transaction services.

Jacqui Cleland

Jacqui Cleland joined Meridian as General Manager of Human Resources in September 2012. She has an extensive background in human resources and has held senior human resources management roles in New Zealand Post, New Zealand Inland Revenue and Fonterra. 

Jacqui was previously a trustee of the New Zealand Post Superannuation Plan. Jacqui also spent a number of years as a university lecturer, teaching and researching in a wide range of business and human resources topics. 

Jacqui's team focuses on developing leaders and executing strategies to help Meridian’s people utilise and grow their capabilities, competencies and skills. This ensures the company is well supported to deliver on its business objectives and aspirations.

Sandra Pickering

Sandra Pickering joined Meridian in July 2016 from Vodafone New Zealand, where she held the roles of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the prior 7 years. Sandra has over 30 years’ experience in ICT in New Zealand and extensively overseas for IBM, Vodafone and now Meridian, in senior management and executive roles in ICT.

In 2012 Sandra was made a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering & Technology in the UK in recognition for her contribution and experience in the Technology Industry. In addition to being on the Executive at Vodafone New Zealand, Sandra was also on the Vodafone Foundation Board and a leader in driving D&I initiatives in the workplace, with a focus on gender and age diversity.

Sandra’s responsibilities include ensuring Meridian has an appropriate ICT strategy and plan to support the Business objectives now and into the future.

Jason Stein

Jason Stein joined Meridian in 2008 as Assistant General Counsel and was appointed General Counsel and Company Secretary in 2010. Jason was also appointed General Manager of the Office of the Chief Executive in 2011. 

Jason is a lawyer and has held in-house roles at financial institutions and in the energy sector, including at vice president and senior counsel levels. Jason has been working in the New Zealand energy sector since 2004. He was formerly the Group Legal Manager of Vector Limited. 

Jason’s team is responsible for providing and managing the Company’s legal services; for providing the corporate governance and company secretarial functions to the Company, the board and the management team; and for regulatory affairs. He also holds directorships associated with Meridian's subsidiaries.

Guy Waipara

Guy Waipara (Rongowhakaata) was appointed to General Manager of Markets and Production in April 2016. Prior to this he was General Manager of External Relations, from August 2010. Guy has also held roles at Meridian in offshore business development and setting company strategy. He has over 20 years' experience in the electricity sector and previously worked at Transpower New Zealand Limited in roles responsible for transmission planning and network development.

Guy is currently a director of Meridian Energy USA, Inc and was previously a director of Energy for Industry Limited (EFI).

Guy is responsible for generation asset management in New Zealand and Australia, and NZ wholesale trading operations. In New Zealand this generation asset portfolio includes seven hydro power stations and four wind farms that deliver about 30% of New Zealand’s electricity generation. Meridian also has two wind farms operating in Australia. Guy's role also involves managing renewable projects and renewable generation options.

Ed McManus

Ed McManus became the Chief Executive Officer of Powershop Australia in January 2016. Ed joined Meridian as General Manager of Powershop Australia in October 2014, from realestate.com.au where he was Group Manager, Marketing Operations. Prior to that he had spent several years at GlaxoSmithKline and headed up its respiratory business, having started his career as a medical research scientist.

Ed is responsible for Powershop retail operations in Australia and corporate functions in Meridian’s Australian business. He heads up a unique service that gives customers transparency and control like they’ve never had before over their energy bill.
