Energy efficient kitchens and hot water

Kitchens can be high energy-use areas because they’re full of appliances and use hot water. Here are ways to reduce energy use.


No cost options


Encourage staff to use the microwave rather than the stovetop or oven.


Ensure the top and back of refrigeration equipment is well ventilated.

Temperature settings

Set the fridge temperature to between 2°C and 4°C, and the freezer to -18°C.


Defrosting the fridge/freezer twice a year helps to keep it running efficiently.


Place your fridge/freezer away from the oven and out of direct sunlight.


Wait until the dishwasher is full before turning it on, and use the economy cycle.

Cover food

Keep food covered to reduce moisture build-up on the inside of the fridge.

Water temperature

Old cylinder thermostats can be inaccurate, so run a tap located close to the cylinder for 30 seconds and measure the water temperature. It should be 60°C in the cylinder and 55˚C at the tap.

Pressure relief valve

Regularly check there’s no excessive water overflow from the hot water pressure relief valve.

Low cost options

Dripping taps

Repair any dripping hot water taps — you could save up to $70 per year, saving energy and water.


If your hot water cylinder is warm to touch, install a hot water cylinder wrap. Alternatively consider installing an ‘A’ grade hot water cylinder.

Appliance care

Keep fridge and freezer seals clean and properly fitted. Replace them when leaking air.

Cylinder size

Choose the right sized hot water system to suit your business needs. And if you’re closing your business for more than two weeks, turn the hot water off.


If you have showers in the workplace, install water saving showerheads.
