Calling all hard labourers – just one week remains until the annual Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend event kicks off.
The two-day multisport event held on Saturday 22 October and Sunday 23 October will see competitors take part in a series of sporting pursuits in a bid to raise funds for local youth sports clubs.
Three events will be held across the weekend: the 20 kilometre Canal Kayak, Pyramid Run off-road half marathon and 40 kilometre Dusky Trail mountain bike race. Those competitors who complete all three events will be crowned Meridian Hard Labourers.
There are also shorter courses available including a 10 kilometre run, a 16 kilometre bike race, and events for children.
Meridian’s Asset Maintenance Manager Mat Bayliss says the kayak leg of the competition will be held in Meridian’s hydro canals, the only time of year this activity is allowed.
“Meridian is proud to support local sports clubs by sponsoring the Twizel Hard Labour Weekend and opening up our canals to keen kayakers. If you’ve always wanted to have a paddle in these waters, make sure you register for the competition as now’s your chance. It’s all for a good cause.”
The Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend is run exclusively by a committee of local volunteers and attracts around 200 competitors each year. Over the last four years the event has raised close to $80,000 for local clubs.
Registrations are open now on the Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend website. Registrations are also available on the day of the events.
