Makara Hall’s 1950’s kitchen is about to get a major overhaul.
Sitting alongside historic St Patrick’s Church, a popular wedding venue, the hall, which was built 1956, is frequently used for wedding receptions and is an important community hub for locals.
Meridian Energy has allocated $16,600 towards the estimated $25,0000 kitchen upgrade from its West Wind Community Fund.
The Makara Community Centre Association manages the hall. Association spokesperson Christine Grace says the upgrade will help ensure the hall remains a popular venue and will bring it up to the standard required by the Food Safety Authority.
“A number of adhoc improvements have been made to the kitchen over the years, which has led to an increase in bookings both from the local community and the Wellington region. says Christine. “But the time has come to do a professional upgrade so we continue to see an increase in hall bookings, which will contribute to the financial sustainability of the hall.“
The latest round of the West Wind Community Fund is also supporting the Makara Pony Club with a $7000 contribution towards the purchase of materials to build a retaining wall on one side of the club’s Arena to prevent fill being lost on one side with a drainage slope.
