Meridian and KidsCan bring positive outlook for Porirua school

Glenview School in Porirua is seeing the benefits of being a KidsCan partner school after coming off the charity’s waiting list.

Twenty students today took part in The Outlook for Someday film-making workshop after winning a Meridian sponsored competition open to schools supported by KidsCan.

Meridian Energy believes every child deserves a decent start in life and is proud to be the principal sponsor of KidsCan.

Glenview School had been on the charity’s waiting list since December 2015 and Principal Lynda Knight-de Blois says KidsCan has been remarkable for the school.

“We have had a constant stream of goodies arriving at the door for our children. The raincoats have been particularly appreciated. They have gone to all children and are identical so no one is singled out. We don’t have a school uniform so they are a great equaliser and give the children a sense of connection.

“The supplies of food mean there is always something in the cupboard for children who don't have lunch or breakfast. We are lucky to have a fantastic kaiawhina who manages our kitchen and takes care of hungry children.”

Being a KidsCan school also means that Glenview School students are able to take part in events such as The Outlook for Someday, which is a full-day workshop where students make short films about sustainability.

“We are a small school and, although our teachers bring a range of skills to their work, film-making hasn't been part of our curriculum. As a Green-Gold Enviroschool the sustainability focus of the workshop is a great fit for us.”

The 70-student decile one primary school in Cannons Creek became a KidsCan partner school in April thanks to the impressive fundraising efforts by the Meridian Fat Fathers Club (FFC) Ride for KidsCan.

Forty Wellington cyclists from the FFC Racing Team rode 700 kilometres from Christchurch to Queenstown to raise $150,000, which has allowed three of the region’s schools to come off the KidsCan waiting list and other partner schools to continue to receive support.

KidsCan CEO Julie Chapman says “We are thrilled to welcome Glenview School on board and are happy to be providing food, clothing and health support to more children who need it. Huge thanks to Meridian Energy for their ongoing support which enables us to do so much more for those going without the basics in life.”
