Hydro stations

Our hydro stations generate enough electricity to power around 1.4 million homes each year.

Lake levels and snow storage

We manage approximately half of New Zealand's hydro storage and publish regular updates to keep the public informed about lake levels for recreation or other purposes.

How hydro energy works

Most of Meridian's electricity is made from the energy of falling water.

Wind farms

Our wind farms generate enough electricity to power around 152,000 homes each year.

How does wind energy work?

Wind can be used to generate electricity. The energy in the wind spins the turbine blades. They in turn spin a shaft connected to a generator and this makes electricity.

Virtual Asset Swap agreements

Meridian has Virtual Asset Swap (VAS) agreements with Mighty River Power and Genesis Energy.

The VAS agreements encourage retail competition in New Zealand by providing retailers with wholesale electricity at a fixed price in regions where they do not own substantial generation assets. This allows retailers to compete in these regions while managing their wholesale market risk.

Signed in December 2010, the agreements took effect on 1 January 2011 and span 15 years, terminating on 31 December 2025.
