Meter replacement

Thinking about replacing your electricity meter? Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

What's a meter replacement?

A meter replacement is the right job to raise if you want to replace your existing electricity meter with a new one - without changing your tariff, supply capacity, or meter location.

Is this the right job for you?

You should raise a meter replacement request if:

  • You want to upgrade to a Smart Meter
  • You are not changing your meter’s location, configuration (tariff), or supply capacity

Note: If you're replacing a meter due to switchboard upgrades or maintenance, please submit a meter relocation request instead.

If you are needing to add export functionality to support on site generation such as solar, please submit a meter tariff change instead.

What's involved?

Once you submit your request:

  • We’ll check we have everything needed to raise the job
  • If all is good, we’ll send it to one of our metering contractors
  • A contractor will visit your site to replace the meter. They will arrange an appointment with you first
  • Power will be switched off for around 45 minutes for safety
  • If there’s no mains switch and power can’t be isolated locally, you’ll need to arrange a temporary disconnection with your network or a network-approved contractor
  • The current meter will be removed and replaced - if you have an analogue meter, it’ll be upgraded to a smart meter
  • Final readings will be taken from the old meter, and your meter data updated in our system and the national registry

Note: It can take up to 2 weeks for readings from the new smart meter to appear in our system.

Important: Any medically dependent person(s) will need to make alternate arrangements while power is turned off, if required.

What's a Smart Meter?

A Smart Meter records your electricity usage every half hour and sends it to us remotely each day.

Benefits include:

  • More accurate billing, usually eliminating the need to estimate your usage
  • Easy monitoring of your usage via our app or website
  • No manual meter readings required

Smart Meters use mobile network signals to communicate. If signal strength is low, your usage may be estimated - but the meter still records accurately. In rare cases, manual readings may still be required.

If you have CTs (Current Transformers)

If your supply is 101 amps (A) or more, you’ll have Category 2 (CAT2) metering which uses Current Transformers (CTs).

For a meter replacement, only the meter is swapped. Existing CTs and wiring remain in place. If new CTs are needed or the switchboard is being upgraded, please submit a meter relocation request instead.
