Reconnection

Needing to reconnect the power at your site? Here's what you need to know to get power back up and running.

What's a reconnection?

A reconnection is needed when you need power and your property is currently disconnected, but the electricity supply is already set up on site.

What you need to do to reconnect

If your site is currently disconnected but the electricity supply is already set up, here’s what you need to do:

Before you contact us:

  • If the site has been disconnected for 6 months or more, you’ll need a Certificate of Verification (COV) from a licensed electrical inspector
  • Make sure the main switch is turned on
  • Be at the site and ready to stay until the power is back on
  • Have your account and/or ICP number ready

A remote reconnection won’t be possible if:

  • The main switch is off at the property
  • There’s no smart meter installed
  • The site has been disconnected for 6 months or more

In these cases, we’ll send a contractor to physically reconnect the power. If a Certificate of Verification (COV) is required, this must be made available to our contractor when they arrive.

Important: You need to be authorised on the Meridian account and at least 18 years old to request a reconnection. Contractors may not call before arriving. They will not reconnect if someone is not on site.

Timeframes and fees

  • Remote reconnections: usually within 30 minutes
  • Physical reconnections: usually within 4 hours (urban) or 6 hours (rural)
  • Urgent physical reconnections: usually within 2 hours (urban) or 4 hours (rural)
  • Fees: see our fees page

Note: The fees above are those charged by Meridian. Additional charges may apply from your network provider or other contractors - they will discuss these with you directly.
