The electricity Meridian generates is 100% renewable - from wind, water, and sun.
The electricity that you purchase from us is sourced from the National Grid, which is a mix of electricity produced by Meridian and other generators (including electricity from non-renewable sources). For this reason, the electricity you consume from the National Grid is not 100% renewable.
If this matters to you, our Certified Renewable Energy product might be a great fit.
This product allows you to report your Scope 2 emissions as zero using the market-based methodology as per the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance.
We match every 1MWh you use from the National Grid with 1MWh of renewable generation from one of our certified assets (like Benmore or West Wind) and provide certificates via BraveTrace to prove it.

Yes, depending on what you need.
We can provide data on your electricity usage to support your carbon reporting. However, we don’t calculate your carbon footprint for you. The Ministry for the Environment is responsible for publishing New Zealand’s electricity emissions factor each year, which you will need to use to calculate your Scope 2 emissions footprint.
If you are on our Certified Renewable Energy product, you’ll receive certificates confirming your electricity usage from the National Grid has been matched with renewable generation from one of our certified assets, like Benmore or West Wind. We offer these to suit RE100 specifications if required.
Yes! If you have solar, wind, or hydro generation on site and network approval, we can buy back any excess generation.
If you already have an export meter, we can start buying back straight away.
If you need to install export metering, visit our Meter tariff change page to get started.
If your site is Commercial and Industrial (C&I), also known as Time of Use (TOU), please reach out to your Energy Partner (account manager) to discuss. Slightly more is involved here.
If you already have an export meter, we can begin buying back your excess generation immediately.
If not, visit our Meter tariff change page to learn what is required and get started.
Not directly.
Battery systems are usually paired with on-site generation like solar. Excess energy is stored and used later, usually to reduce costs.
Meridian may not know you have a battery, and if it’s not paired with generation, it won’t have export functionality - so it’s business as usual for us.
If you do have excess generation and an export meter, we can buy it back.
