Meter relocation

A meter relocation is needed when your electricity meter must be moved, reinstalled, or re-certified due to electrical work or switchboard upgrades - even if the meter itself stays in place.

You may need this job if:

• Your meter is being moved to a new location on the property
• You’re upgrading or rebuilding your switchboard
• You’re converting overhead supply to underground
• Electrical work requires meter re-certification

Once you submit your request:

• We’ll check we have everything needed to raise the job
• If all is good, we’ll send it to one of our metering contractors
• The contractor will contact your electrician or site contact to arrange an appointment
• When on site, they’ll check compliance. If wiring changes were made, a Certificate of Compliance (COC) is required
• Power will be switched off for around 45 minutes for safety
• If there’s no mains switch and power can’t be isolated locally, you’ll need to arrange a temporary disconnection with your network or a network-approved contractor
• The current meter will be removed and replaced - if you have a legacy meter, it’ll be upgraded to a smart meter
• Final readings will be taken from the old meter, and your meter data updated in our system and the national registry

Note: It can take up to 2 weeks for readings from the new smart meter to appear in our system.

Important: Any medically dependent person(s) will need to make alternate arrangements while power is turned off, if required.

If your supply is 101 amps (A) or more, you’ll need Category 2 (CAT2) metering, which uses CTs. These safely reduce high current so the meter can measure it accurately.

Meridian supplies CTs with a 5/500 ratio - for every 5 kWh shown on the meter, 500 kWh have actually passed through the CTs and been used.

If your site already has CTs, your electrician or switchboard manufacturer will need to confirm if new ones are required.

If new CTs are needed, we’ll ask for:

• CT bore size
• CT Mounting type (base or bar mounted)
• Switchboard manufacturer details
• Delivery address for the CTs

Note: The delivery address for the CTs must be able to receive courier post. This means PO Boxes cannot be used.

• A short description of the work being carried out
• The current and new meter location
• Site capacity:
  • (100A or less)
  • (101A to 500A)
  • (501A plus)
• New CT specifications (if applicable)
• Your contact details
• Business name and business contact person
• Electrician’s contact details
• Your preferred inspector (e.g., Vircom, Wells, Safepower)
• Site access requirements, restrictions, or hazards

Important: If you're in the Network Tasman region, you must submit a Network Connection Application (NCA) form via their website and have it approved before we can raise the job. Please attach the approval document to your request.
