The Partnership

Kākāpō are one of New Zealand’s most endangered species, with the total population sitting at around 160 birds. DOC and Meridian Energy have joined forces to support the Kākāpō Recovery Programme, which aims to bring back kākāpō to their former natural range and restore the heartbeat of the land.

This partnership will contribute to the future growth of the kākāpō population, by helping DOC to fund research and pioneer conservation techniques relating to genetics, nutrition, disease management and finding new sites. It will also help raise awareness of the plight of kākāpō.

Key to the success of this programme is the strength of the partnership between Meridian and Ngāi Tahu, which continues to foster understanding and support of each other’s views and long-term aspirations.

“Kākāpō are treasured by Ngāi Tahu as a taonga species, they are part of our tribal identity and it’s wonderful to see that Meridian values them too,” says Tāne Davis, the Ngāi Tahu appointee to the Kākāpō Recovery Group.

About kākāpō and the Kākāpō Recovery Programme

Large, flightless and nocturnal, the kākāpō is an eccentric parrot which can live for decades. The kākāpō is listed as critically endangered and is only found on offshore islands around New Zealand.

Kākāpō Recovery is a world class conservation programme that has been in place since 1990, working to bring back kākāpō from the brink of extinction from a low of just 50 birds in 1995 to around 160 today. The Kākāpō Recovery Programme combines the efforts of scientists, rangers and volunteers, who are charged with looking after the few remaining kākāpō in the world.
